Miami-Dade County has reached a tentative agreement with the school district to add police officers to every school in the county, according to a news release.
The move is an expansion to the previous rule, which placed officers at every middle and high school throughout the county. Under the new agreement, officers would also be stationed at elementary schools and K-8 centers, according to a news release.
After the Parkland school shooting, the state of Florida required every school to arm security personnel. But Miami-Dade schools said they didn’t just want to arm anyone, asking specifically for trained, qualified officers.
In a last minute negotiation Thursday, the City of Miami and the Miami-Dade school district worked out a plan to arm their remaining 36 elementary schools with officers. As part of that agreement, there will be a Miami officer in every school in that city, a push for long term state funding and the district will be able to use the city’s police academy at no cost.
Miami Gardens also has a tentative agreement for their police force to cover 10 schools in that area. The signing of the agreement is scheduled to take place Friday at 12:30 p.m.
