Mother Beat Toddler, Had to Be Tased: Police

Homestead mother arrested for beating 7-month-old boy

A Homestead mother is accused of beating her young child into unconsciousness overnight, police said.

The incident happened Sunday night on Northeast 13th Street when police received a 911 call of an intoxicated woman beating her child.

Police said they had to use a taser on the mother, identified as 22-year-old Ana Lopez, to take her into custody.

"She was highly intoxicated according to the officers who were at the scene," said Det. Fernando Morales, with the Homestead Police Department. "The Department of Children and Family Services was also contacted and made aware of this incident."

The child, a 7-month-old boy, was airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital in stable condition. Lopez was also taken to a hospital for injuries resulting from the tasering.

Lopez faces charges of child abuse and assault on a police officer.
