Man and His Wife Arrested, Multiple Miami Officers Hospitalized After Crash

Hector Guzman, 54, was taken into custody in connection with the crash, officials said

A man and his wife were arrested after a crash near downtown Miami late Sunday left three police officers hospitalized.

Miami Police Department officials tweeted that the officers were helping at a scene near Northwest 12th Street and 12th Avenue just before midnight when they were struck by a vehicle.

The officers were taken to nearby Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment. Two of the officers were later released from the hospital while a third was still recovering.

An arrest report said one officer suffered a broken ankle, while another officer had multiple fractures, a collapsed lung and a liver laceration.

The alleged driver, 54-year-old Hector Guzman, was taken into custody and charged with several counts that include driving with a suspended license and perjury, the report said.

Officials said Guzman's wife, 43-year-old Jacqueline Perez, was also arrested on a charge of permitting an unauthorized operator to drive a vehicle.

According to the report, Hector Guzman moved into the passenger seat of the car and initially claimed that someone else had been driving the car.

Guzman later admitted that he had been driving and said "blacked out but knew he hit something," the report said.

Attorney information wasn't available.
