NFL Player Injured in Fireworks Accident Has Finger Amputated: Reports

New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had his right finger amputated Wednesday following a fireworks accident in Broward County, according to ESPN.

According to reports, Pierre-Paul opted for the amputation because it was the best decision for his health and his career going forward.

Sources tell ESPN that the amputation site should heal in approximately three weeks and that he is expected to still play this season.

The Giants had revoked their $60 million long-term contract offer following the incident, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported earlier in the week. Pierre-Paul reportedly had no intention of accepting that deal to begin with.

Pierre-Paul sustained the injury while lighting fireworks during July 4 celebrations in Coral Springs. NFL.com reported

His incident was one of several fireworks mishaps in South Florida around the Fourth of July weekend.

The Broward Sheriff's Office reported that a man blew his hand off while lighting fireworks in Dania Beach, while a few days later, a 13-year-old boy was injured by fireworks in Fort Lauderdale.
