New Daytona Motorsports Stadium Nears Completion

Construction of a $400 million makeover to Daytona International Speedway is nearing completion.

The renovations should be finished by early next year, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported on Saturday.

Joie Chitwood III, president of Daytona International Speedway, said workers are adding finishing touches to the nearly mile-long motorsports stadium.

"Give or take, we got about 130 days to go,'' Chitwood said. "After two years and a month, that doesn't seem like any amount of time, but we are getting so excited when we get to the 100-day count down."

About 600 workers were onsite in the last week working on the stadium tower and concourse restrooms.

"We are down to the granular level now,'' project director Len Moser said. "The schedule has changed to 'We will finish that next week' to 'Today we'll finish this, so tomorrow we can start on that.'"

The tower is the primary focus and  Moser said it should be fully glassed-in by the end of this month.

"The structure is all in place,'' Chitwood said. "Now we're working on the finishes, whether it is the concourse areas or the tower.''

Once finished, the speedway will have 101,000 premium seats for fans to view racing events and the world-famous speedway.
