New Lunch Items Added To Broward County Public Schools

Broward County Public Schools started its first day of the 2019-20 school year with some new food items on their lunch menu. School officials with the Broward County Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services said they decided to add the changes after the new food choices were popular at a student food show. New menu items include Lemongrass Chicken and Meatloaf with Gravy, which put a modern twist on some classic school lunch favorites.

"This is a completely different change of pace for foodservice, I mean meatloaf, you remember meatloaf from 20-30 years ago, it is coming back. Kids seem to enjoy that," said Jason Port, the district’s chef with Food and Nutrition Services, during a preview of the new menu items.

This year Broward Public School cafeterias will serve more fruits and vegetables. Students who prefer vegan and vegetarian dishes year will have the following options:

  • The Sunbutter and Grape Jelly Sandwich is made with sunflower butter.
  • The Vegan Chik’n Nugget Salad.
  • The Vegan Bean and Green Chili Burrito
  • No Nut Butter with Smart Cookies

All items on the menu meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. School lunches provide an assortment of foods including daily entree salads and fresh fruit.
