New McDonald's Menus Give Calorie Count For Every Item

The hotcakes have the most calories, and the apple slices have the least

Some people like to say, what they don’t know won’t hurt them when they bite into a Big Mac … until now.

McDonald’s is telling customers exactly how many calories are in every single item â€“ and those calories aren’t going to be in fine print. The numbers will be written in the same size as the prices.

"I think it's going to make me a little more cautious with what I'm ordering and what I should not be ordering," customer Elizabeth King said.

Most of the customers NBC 6 South Florida talked to weren't surprised by the numbers.

The lowest amount of calories in an item is 15 for a package of apple slices. The big breakfast with hotcakes has the most at 1090 calories.

"All McDonald's is trying to do is say, hey, we're not perfect. Obviously we're a quick-service restaurant but what we're trying to do is meet the customers' needs," McDonald's owner and operator Jeff Smith said. "The importance of this is that we want just to provide healthy alternatives for those who are interested in living a healthy lifestyle."

Smith says 15 percent of people regularly count calories.

So, after people see these new numbers on the menu, will this change what they order? It changed Miramar woman Audry Blacho's mind. She skipped on the fries after seeing they had 380 calories.

"Usually you order the whole meal and it's 1050 calories, right now you can play around with the calories," she said.

If you’re one of those people who thinks what you don’t know won’t hurt you when it comes to calorie count, you have six days left until the change is made nationwide.

"It gives you an indication of what you're taking in and how much. I think it's a good resource, for parents especially," King said.

Every McDonald’s will have these new menus posted Sunday, but eventually, most restaurants will be required to do this as part of the new health care law.
