Officer Injured, Driver Arrested After Early Morning Crash in Overtown

A police officer was rushed to the hospital early Thursday morning after the car he was in got struck by another vehicle in Overtown.

The incident took place just after 3 a.m. near the area of Northwest 3rd Avenue and 14th Street when the Miami Police Department officer’s unmarked vehicle was struck by a car driven by a woman.

The 39-year-old officer, who was not identified, was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center with an apparent head injury but his condition was not released at this time. Reports say the officer may have lost consciousness after the crash, but that has not been confirmed.

Officers were seen giving the female driver of the other car involved, identified as 33-year-old Belkis Salgado, a sobriety test and placing her in handcuffs, with officials saying she has been charged with driving under the influence as well as other charges.
