Officials Confirm Case of Mumps at Pioneer Middle School

The mumps, an acute viral disease, can be spread through infected saliva.

Broward County Public Schools officials informed parents Monday that a Cooper City middle school has a confirmed case of the mumps.

Students at Pioneer Middle School presenting any signs and symptoms of the disease will be excluded from school, officials said in letter addressed to parents.

The signs and symptoms of mumps includes fever, swelling and tenderness or pain in the area of the neck, loss of appetite, vague feeling of weakness, headache, fever, an earache aggravated by chewing, swelling under the jaw, and pain when chewing or when drinking sour or acidic liquids.
