Olympic Gold Medalist Helps Fight Pet Obesity

Misty May-Treanor partners with Purina to combat pet obesity

She may be a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist but Misty May-Treanor still has a soft spot for animals.

The professional volleyball player has partnered with Purina and Project Pet Slim Down to help fight pet obesity.

“I can’t imagine my life without an animal,” Treanor told NBC 6. “I grew up with dogs and cats.”

The program will connect vets with pet owners to provide them with ideas about how to properly feed and exercise their pets.

“As pet owners, we love to feed our animals and don’t really understand the need for exercise to counter balance it, so pet obesity has become a bigger problem,” Treanor said.

Treanor and her teammate Kerri Walsh clinched the gold medal in beach volleyball in 2004 and 2008 and will go on to compete in London 2012.

The medalist will be home for the next couple of weeks and said she plans to “push the weights a little more, get into a more solid routine,” before hitting the road to compete.

“Our goal is to go after another gold medal in London. We want to peak during that time,” she said.
