Man Killed in Fatal Hit and Run in SW Miami-Dade: Police

A pedestrian was struck and killed while crossing the street in southwest Miami-Dade early Thursday morning.

The crash occurred at Bird Road and 112th Avenue around 6 a.m., Florida Highway Patrol officials said.

Authorities confirm it was a hit-and-run accident.

Officials said the victim was crossing the street outside of the crosswalk when he was struck by the car, which fled the scene.

"We heard a crashing impact," witness Jorge Hernandez said. "The guy's car left a lot of evidence and stuff."

Hernandez said he knew the victim and that the victim was trying to find day work outside a nearby Home Depot.

Trooper Joe Sanchez said if the driver had stayed to help, they might not have been facing charges.

The pedestrian was later identified as Miguel Morales.

"Apparently it was not the driver's fault," he said.

"We see that a lot, I don't know why. I don't know, maybe people get scared or maybe they have suspended driver's licenses or a warrant, no insurance, that is not a reason to leave the scene. You basically took someone's life, you know, where's the compassion?," Sanchez said.

All eastbound and westbound lanes were blocked as crews responded to the scene.

There are no witness descriptions at this time so authorities don't know what vehicle to look for. However, they believe that two vehicle's may be involved in the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
