The Opa-Locka Police Department revealed Tuesday that one of its police officers was arrested on aggravated battery charges.
Officer Stanley Jean-Francois was off-duty when he was taken into custody Sunday in Miami, police said. Opa-Locka Chief James Dobson said officer Jean-Francois was not involved in a domestic violence situation. He offered no other detail about the incident other than it had nothing to do with police work.
"It's disheartening to have one of your officers arrested, but we believe in justice. And, whatever occurs in this investigation, we will stand behind whatever the law does and we still have an administrative investigation that we have to conduct, also," said Chief Dobson.
The officer was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a charge that could carry a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
Jean-Francois has been with the department for 10 years and has a clean record, both with the department and with the public. He was named officer of the month a few years ago.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay.
