Palm Beach County City Considering Name Change Over Tourism, Crime Rates

What to Know

  • City commissioners in Lake Worth are considering a plan that would add the word “Beach” to the end of its name.

What’s in a name? Well, for one Palm Beach County city, adding a word could be the difference between how some view the area.

City commissioners in Lake Worth are considering a plan that would add the word “Beach” to the end of its name, according to NBC affiliate WPTV. Commissioners say the move would be done to attract tourists as well as distinguish itself from unincorporated areas with higher crime rates.

“There are cities in Palm Beach County that don’t have a beach and yet they have beach in their name. We have a beach, and we don’t have beach in our name,” Commissioner Omari Hardy told the station. “A lot of the crimes that happen outside of Lake Worth, just because they’re along the Lake Worth corridor, people say oh that happened in Lake Worth when it didn’t happen in Lake Worth.”

Commissioners will vote twice on the proposal next month. If it passes – and currently, officials say it has no opposition – voters in the city would go to the polls March 12th to make the final decision.
