Palm Beach County Family Unhurt After House Fire They Claim Was Caused By Charging Hoverboard

A Palm Beach County family was unhurt after a fire broke out inside their home – a blaze they say was started by a hoverboard that was charging inside a bedroom.

Cheryl Wade told NBC affiliate WPTV that her granddaughter had decided she wanted to charge the device inside the Rivera Beach home Wednesday night.

“She plugged it in, and 10 minutes later it just started smoking,” Wade said. “The fire just burst up and I jumped up. I was trying to wake her up, and then I'm trying to put it out with her covers.”

Wade told the station they were trapped in the room because it was charging by the bedroom door, prompting them to climb out of a window. She said the fire would have spread through the house if they hadn’t closed that door.

Now, she is telling everyone she can to not by the hoverboards – which have been blamed for several fires and prompted a massive recall last year.

"Don’t buy any more hoverboards for your kids. Please no more, just as simple as that, they’re going to end up killing somebody," said Wade.
