Deputies in Palm Beach County are investigating a weekend incident after a man allegedly stole a car with a 6-year-old child inside and was later shot by the child’s father.

NBC affiliate WPTV reports incident took place early Saturday morning after the father got out of his car, which was parked and running, to say goodbye to some friends. After that, Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office investigators say a man later identified as Lamar Thurman got inside the 2021 Honda and drove away with the young boy in the backseat.

PBSO says the child’s father, who was not identified, chased after the vehicle along with friends and called 911 for help. Shortly after, Thurman crashed the vehicle near Lantana.

As the father and his friends approached the car, investigators say Thurman was able to get the car moving against and drove away. The father, who had a handgun, opened fire and struck Thurman several times before the car crash shortly down the street.

The child was not hurt while Thurman was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police have not released information on possible charges in the case for either Thurman or the child’s father.
