  • Police believe Duberry was targeted in the killing and that the shooter may have known him.

On June 16, 2012, Frederick Duberry was ambushed by a man carrying a military-style rifle. Duberry had just parked his car in his Palmetto Bay driveway when the unknown man approached him and fired multiple shots.

"We still hurt every day. I still find myself crying, find myself by myself, hurt because someone just took my Dad," Frederick Duberry Jr., the victim's son, said.

The suspect was caught on camera killing Duberry. The video shows Duberry was shot at close proximity.

"How can someone just take a family man and just shoot him for whatever reason?" Duberry's mother Margaret John said.

Duberry died on top of his driveway between two parked cars.

"What struck out to me was the fact that nothing else was hit. That it was just him. Then when we saw the video, we knew why. We could see that he was the target," Miami-Dade Police Department detective Jessica Alvarez said.

The killer ran to a waiting car and more than five years later he remains on the run. Duberry's mother believes the person who killed her son was close to him and she can't fathom why they would take his life.

"You try to tell yourself that didn't happen. I'm dreaming. It's a bad dream. I'm going to wake up and you don't wake up," John said.

Anyone with information on the case may be eligible for up to a $3,000 reward. Call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers anonymously at 305-471-8477.
