Panthers Beat Red Wings in Overtime

The Panthers beat the Red Wings 2-1 in Detroit in overtime on Thursday

The Florida Panthers came away 2-1 winners in overtime over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.

This was the third time in Florida's last four games that it played in overtime. The Panthers split a pair of shootouts prior to this one, and have overall had success in OT this season. The Panthers are now 12-10-2 on the season, which is good for 26 points.

With the Panthers down by a goal early, Jason Demers tied things up in the first period. Reilly Smith and Keith Yandle assisted on Demers on his third goal of the season at the 18:15 mark.

The teams would hold one another scoreless for the next two periods to force the extra five minutes. It was there that Aleksander Barkov broke away from the pack and found the net for the game-winner. Barkov's goal was his third of the season and came with an assist from Jonathan Marchessault.

Roberto Luongo had another solid game in the net for Florida with 20 saves on his 21 chances. Luongo has now allowed one goal in each of his last three games as Florida's goalie.

Following a day off, the road trip will resume on Saturday when Florida heads to Ottawa for a contest against the Senators.
