Passport Companies Under Fire

Several local passport companies are taking customers for a ride, according to complaints

The Better Business Bureau’s Mike Galvin said Friday he’s seeing trouble in South Florida for those who need passports to travel outside the U.S.

Galvin said his office has been hit with a list of complaints by area residents who paid firms thinking they would be able to travel abroad, but the passport companies never delivered.

The BBB is now giving companies like Pompano Beach-based US Passport 123 an F rating for having 47 complaints over the last year.

Another South Florida firm, US Passport Services, based in Palm Beach County also received an F rating for the 139 complaints against it.

U.S. Passport Services never returned calls or emails for a response. US Passport 123 declined an on camera interview, said it didn’t comment on complaints.

Customers told the BBB they paid money up front but never got passports at all, or received the passports but with incorrect or erroneous data.

Some got the passports after they planned to travel, Galvin said.

"You look at a lot of these websites and they are pictorials," he said. "There’s not a lot of words and people are impressed with official seals and a lot of times it's not a government website."
