FIU Pedestrian Bridge Causes Closures and Detours

Construction of a new Florida International University pedestrian bridge is causing some closures and detours this weekend.

The bridge is meant to enhance safety for students and will connect the campus to the City of Sweetwater. While the final stages of construction get underway, SW 8th Street will be closed between 107th Avenue and 117th Avenue. The portion of the road will be closed until 5 a.m. on Monday. The road has been closed since 9 p.m. Friday.

Crews will be working throughout the weekend to position the 174-foot section of the FIU-Sweetwater UniversityCity bridge. Although the bridge will be moved this weekend, there is still more work to be done. Overall, the construction project includes the bridge, sidewalk and a plaza. Construction is expected to be complete in early 2019.
