Community in Pembroke Pines on Edge After Armed Carjackings

The Pembroke Pines Police Department has urged residents to remain cautious after armed carjackings last week in the Windmill Lakes community.

Police said the carjackings occurred on Wednesday and Thursday.

In the Wednesday incident, two armed suspects approached a woman who was sitting in her car at about 9 p.m. They ordered her out of the vehicle and they left the community with her 2017 gray Toyota Corolla with the license playe HEYX92. She was not injured and shots were not fired.

Both suspects in that carjacking are described as black males in their late teens or early 20s who are about five feet seven inches tall and weigh about 170 pounds.

On Thursday, a similar incident occurred. A victim was sitting inside her parked vehicle and an armed suspect entered her car through the passenger door. Another suspect then approached the driver's side and told the victim to get out of the vehicle.

Once she left, a third suspect entered her 2011 silver Hyundai Sonata with the license plate 879XJD. The three suspects were described as black males. No other descriptive information was available.

“We believe that these two incidents are likely related to each other and due to similarities in the location and suspect description we’re asking for assistance from the community in trying to identify these individuals," said Capt. Al Xiques.

The recent criminal activity has left residents worried they may be the next target and the victims worried for their safety.

“I haven’t been able to sleep. I have not been able to go back to the apartment until my kids change the locks," said the second victim during a Tuesday press conference.

“You who did this are cowards and you are not going to do that on this city," Mayor Frank Ortis told reporters. "Our great police department will get you.”
