Piano Man Making Soothing Hospital Music

Bertran Friedlieb helps patients stop singing the blues at Aventura hospital

A piano man is making people smile at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center.

Once a patient, 79-year-old Bertran Friedlieb volunteers his time to brighten up the days of other patients who might be singing the blues.

Friedlieb has been tickling the ivories every day for the past five months in the hospital's entrance.

He said it all started when he and his wife were eating in the cafeteria and he looked over and saw the piano.

"If I see a piano, I'm drawn to it like a magnet," Friedlieb said. "I must play it."

Since then, he's played every day with an audience. His wife is always nearby listening with other patients and employees.

"They can't believe how fast he plays," Marilyn Friedlieb said. "His fingers fly on the piano."

Friedlieb has had several minor surgeries at the medical center and knows how tough it can be for the people admitted and their families.

The retired lawyer said he does it because it is his passion.

"I'm going to do this forever," Friedlieb said.
