Pilot Escapes After Helicopter Crash in Central Florida

A pilot was able to escape after his mosquito control helicopter crashed near New Smyrna Beach.

Authorities say the helicopter crashed into the woods in a rural area on Thursday afternoon.

Volusia County spokesman Dave Byron says 43-year-old Brian Hayes called 911 and stayed on the line with dispatchers until fire officials could track his call. It took about 40 minutes for rescuers to find him in the dense wooded area.

Byron says the pilot's injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports it's not clear what caused the 1989 McDonnell Douglas Rotocraft to crash. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
