'Pirate' Fired Pistols on Florida Keys Bridge: Deputies

A man dressed in full pirate costume was arrested after firing his guns on the old Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys Monday night, authorities said.

Jamie Don Spering, 58, is charged with disorderly conduct following his arrest in Marathon, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. It was unknown if he has a private attorney.

Deputies responding to a shots fired call found Spering in costume with operational black powder pistols on each hip, a sword and two knives, authorities said.

Spering, who said he is an entertainer, was on the bridge with friends watching the sunset when the incident happened. He admitted to firing the pistols, which had no projectiles loaded, just the powder, authorities said.

Spering claimed he shot them safely toward the water but witnesses said he fired one at the water and one at cars traveling on the bridge, authorities said.
