Pit Bull Bit 3-Year-Old Girl's Face in Palm Beach Gardens: Authorities

She is in stable condition at St. Mary's Medical Center, The Palm Beach Post reported

A 3-year-old Palm Beach Gardens girl is hospitalized in stable condition after a pit bull bit her face, authorities said.

Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control Capt. David Walesky said the 6-year-old dog named Rusty has been quarantined for 10 days because its rabies vaccinations were not current.

The girl has cuts and puncture wounds to her face and is being treated at St. Mary’s Medical Center, The Palm Beach Post reported.

Walesky told the newspaper that it's not clear what prompted the dog to bite the girl at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the East Highland Pines Drive neighborhood. Investigators will determine whether Rusty meets dangerous dog criteria.

“The dog has been very friendly with everyone else so we don’t know why this little girl was bit,” Walesky said. “We have to look at exactly what happened.”

She was riding a bicycle Wednesday near the yard where the dog was tethered to its owner's truck. The owner was inside his home.

“She went up into property where the dog lawfully was,” Walesky told the Post.
