Florida's Turnpike Reopened After Hoax Bomb Threat

Parts of Florida's Turnpike shut down Monday evening as Miami-Dade police investigated an explosive threat that turned out to be a hoax.

Florida Highway Patrol blocked off both directions of the Turnpike from the Dolphin Expressway to Bird Road. Officials also closed all exits, including the 8th Street exit, along this stretch of road.

Officers responded to a report of a bomb threat near Southwest 18th Street and 117th Avenue.

About an hour later, the all clear was given. Authorities said they entered the apartment in question and found no one in danger and no one injured.

Officers said a bogus call was made from Miami Beach, claiming there was a man strapped in explosives at the Tamiami apartment.

The report of the explosive threat triggered major traffic delays. Florida International University had alerted students and staff to avoid the west side of campus including entrances and exits during the police activity.
