Man Killed, Miami-Dade Officer Hurt in Shooting on I-95

An officer from the Miami-Dade Police Department was involved in a shooting after a subject bit him, almost severing his finger, according to police.

It happened in Northwest Miami-Dade and involved an officer from the Northside District.

At approximately 5 a.m. Monday, MDPD dispatched an officer to an accident at the 119th Street entrance ramp of southbound I-95.

Upon arrival, police said the officer made contact with a road ranger who advised him that the subject, later identified as Junior Prosper, had been driving a taxi which crashed, and had run from the scene, south onto I-95.

The officer gave chase and attempted to apprehend Prosper. In an ensuing altercation, police said Prosper bit the officer, almost severing a finger on his left hand. They said the officer discharged his service weapon, hitting Prosper.

The following exchange was made between the officer and dispatch during his radio transmission call:

Dispatcher: "Attention all units. 119th Street and I-95, shots fired, shots fired."
Officer: "Subject bit my finger off."

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced Prosper, 31, dead at the scene. The officer was transported to Ryder Trauma Center where he underwent surgery for his injuries. He has since been released.

MDPD said the officer's Electronic Control Device was discharged during the altercation. Detectives are investigating to determine whether it was discharged by the officer or Prosper.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting the investigation.

The officer's name has not been released, but police said he is a nine-year veteran with the department.
