Police Credit Quiet Urban Beach Weekend to Large Officer Presence

"Have fun, be safe, and be responsible."

That's the message the Miami Beach Police Department has aimed to get across as Urban Beach Weekend brings many to the streets of South Beach.

Twenty-five people were arrested from Saturday night to Sunday morning. That is a little less than half of the amount of arrests for the same time frame last year.

Miami Beach Police are out in full force, with an estimated 500 officers on patrol. They credit high visibility, DUI checkpoints and license plate readers for helping to control the crowds.

Those who have attended past Urban Beach Weekends say they too can see the difference.

"It's better, there's more security, a lot of police out on patrol, streets blocked off," said Mike Sinchat, who attended last year. "I feel safe. I brought my grandma and mom here actually."

Sarah Dutton has attended for five years in a row, and noticed the calmer conditions compared to previous years.

"There's not a lot of fights going on," Dutton said. "Not as crowded, so it's cool."

With Memorial Day on Monday, police hope the safe conditions continue.
