Mother, Teen Daughter Shot and Killed Inside Home During SWAT Standoff With Suspect

The bodies of a mother and her teen daughter were discovered in a home in Sunrise after an hours-long police standoff ended with a man in custody Monday, authorities said.

Dozens of officers and a SWAT team responded to the complex in the 7700 block of Balboa Street after they received a call of shots fired around 11 a.m., officials said.

Police negotiated with a man inside one of the homes, and the man later surrendered after more than five hours inside. He was identified as 32-year-old Kevin Nelson.

Officers later found the bodies of a 40-year-old woman and her 15-year-old daughter inside the home. Family identified the teen as Shanice Smith.

The teen girl's grandfather was distraught by the news.

"She didn't really deserve this. Neither one of them," he said at the scene.

Some neighbors were evacuated from their homes moments after SWAT arrived.

"The SWAT van came up and ran over a tree and a fence and got as close to the door as they could," neighbor Michael Plesak said.

Court records show that Nelson has been arrested for domestic violence in the past. It's unknown what charges he'll face.
