Miami-Dade Hit-and-Run Suspect Turns Himself In: MDPD

A Miramar man has turned himself in to police in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash in northwest Miami-Dade.

Arrest records indicate that 22-year-old Leon Thomas, who's in the military, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a deadly crash, and was ordered to be held on $10,000 bond.

According to an arrest report, Thomas struck a bicyclist who was crossing at the crosswalk in the 2400 block of Northwest 119th Street Sunday night.

Police said Thomas slowed down, placed his emergency hazard lights on and continued driving without rendering aid or calling 911.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Thomas turned himself in to police Monday morning just after midnight. He confessed to police that he panicked after the crash, then drove to a friend's house located in the 1000 block of Northwest 127th Street.

There, Thomas attempted to cover his damaged windshield with a plastic bag and removed his Georgia plates from the vehicle, then asked the friend to drive him home, according to the arrest report.

It is not known whether Thomas has hired an attorney.
