Two burglary suspects are in custody and police are searching for a third after a chase ended in a crash in Lauderhill Wednesday.

The incident began with a burglary at 1792 Northwest 55th Ave. When officers arrived, the three suspects jumped into a pickup truck and fled the scene.

Police began pursuing the suspects until they crashed near a canal in the area of Rock Island Road and 44th Street, near Florida's Turnpike. The truck caught on fire after the crash.

The truck was stolen from owner Willie Kelly’s driveway – who learned about the theft after his vehicle appeared on television.

“My mother-in-law called and said ‘Hey, your truck is on the news. I know it’s your truck,’ because my mother-in-law knows the truck,” Kelly said. “So we left everything in the store, then we came up here, and I seen my truck smoking, on fire.”

Police said they arrested one suspect on the scene.

“The remaining two actually jumped over a guardrail, swam across the canal, exited the other side of the canal, ran across the Turnpike, which at this point of the day is extremely busy,” said Lauderhill Police spokesman Lt. Mike Butkus.

The second suspect was found hiding nearby. The third remains on the run.
