Miami-Dade Police Sergeant Accused of Stealing County Gas Found Guilty

A suspended Miami-Dade police sergeant on trial for stealing county gas for personal use learned his fate in court Tuesday.

A jury found Emil Van Lugo guilty of organized fraud.

Prosecutors said Van Lugo, a 16-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department, repeatedly stole fuel from a county-owned pump and used it to fill up his wife's BMW.

Defense attorneys said the embattled sergeant kept gas cans that look identical; one filled with county gas and the other with his own gas, for his and his wife's cars.

Van Lugo also claimed he would never use regular gas in his luxury cars.

He faces up to five years in prison and the loss of his law enforcement certification.

Van Lugo also faces five other theft charges.

A sentencing date has yet to be scheduled.
