Florida Turnpike Reopens After Miami-Dade Police Standoff

A police standoff had a portion of the Florida Turnpike shut down in Miami-Dade Thursday.

The incident was reported near the end of the Turnpike at U.S. 1. All of the northbound and southbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed for several hours as a result.

The Turnpike reopened around 6 p.m.

Miami-Dade Police and a SWAT team responded to the scene and one person was taken into custody.

Police later said they had received a call that the 45-year-old man, Troy Sibila, had made threats to harm himself and his family.

Officers pursued Sibila in a car on the Turnpike and noticed he had a gun to his head, police said.

A hostage negotiator got him on the phone and spent several hours pleading with him to end the situation peacefully, police said.

Sibila was booked into jail and will face charges of fleeing and eluding and possession of a firearm by a felon, police said.
