Police on Lookout for Drivers Violating Railroad Safety Laws Across South Florida

What to Know

  • Operation Clear Track, in its second year, takes place Tuesday with officers monitoring locations to make sure drivers follow the law.

As part of National Rail Safety Week, several South Florida law enforcement agencies will take part in an annual event designed to remind drivers about the dangers of violating laws at train crossings.

Operation Clear Track, in its second year, takes place Tuesday with officers monitoring locations to make sure drivers do not attempt to continue going while crossing gates are coming down among other violations.

Officials from the Broward Sheriff’s Office will be monitoring and issuing citations in areas that include Dania Beach, Deerfield Beach, Oakland Park and Pompano Beach while the Wilton Manors Police Department will do the same in their city limits.

The day comes just one week after a woman drove onto the tracks near Hallandale Beach – saying she mistook it for a road – and got out of her car before it was struck by a Brightline high speed rail train, just the latest incident involving the service from Miami to West Palm Beach that has killed at least four people since starting this year.

Other train services, including Tri-Rail, have also experienced similar incidents and promoted officials to remind drivers of the dangers involved.
