Fire Damages Pompano Beach Home, Displacing Residents

A fire took out the roof of a home in Pompano Beach Monday morning, forcing two people to evacuate.

The fire occurred at around 10 a.m. in the 700 block of NW 15 Court, fire authorities said. Dean Gilbert and his roommate smelled smoke and heard their neighbors calling for them to get out.

"I got to the window, opened the window, started breathing and then I hollered for help," Gilbert said.

Bad health cost Gilbert his left leg two years ago, so he needed assistance to get out. With the help of two men, he was able to escape.

Winds fanned the flames to the neighboring house, but firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in time before it spread.

"Not a good day, just before Christmas," Gilbert said. "It's the holiday season, it's just said."

The Red Cross said it's assisting Gilbert and his roommate on emergency needs such as lodging, food and clothing.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
