Pot-Swiping Dirty Cop Going to Jail

Miami-Dade officer gets prison for stealing weed, cash while on duty

The crooked Miami-Dade cop who stole pot and cash from a man during a traffic stop will be spending the next month with some old friends.

Officer Jesus Rodlfo Hernandez was hit with 30 days in jail and will never serve and protect again after he pleaded guilty yesterday to grand theft, marijuana possession and tampering with evidence, according to the Miami Herald.

Hernandez, 24, was busted in April after he was caught in a sting set up by detectives from his own department. The four-year veteran swiped $575 and a baggie of pot from a motorist he had pulled over.

In addition to the jail time and losing his law-enforcement credentials, Hernandez will be on probation for two years and pay a $25,000 fine.

"Removing a crooked cop from our streets always provides a tremendous sense of relief and vindication for the prosecutors and police who thoroughly work the case," Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle told the Herald. "However, the betrayal of the officer's department and of the people of this community can never be overlooked nor easily forgiven."

Hernandez, whose father is a cop, is no stranger to controversy. In February of last year, he shot and injured electronics store owner Jose Rodriguez during a burglary call at the business, mistaking Rodriguez for the burglar.

Rodriguez filed a negligence suit against the county, with a trial still pending.
