Get ready for picket signs and traffic jams because the president is coming to town. Well actually, another president is coming to town.
President Barack Obama is expected to head a Democrat fundraiser on Wednesday, marking the second sighting of an Oval Office frequenter for the week.
Former President Bill Clinton hit the campaign trail for U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek on Monday, stopping in West Palm, Broward and Miami-Dade. In case you were wondering, Meek is running for the U.S. Senate, which is worth pointing out because some people didn't have a clue who he was.
To be honest, some didn't care as long as they got a glimpse of Clinton. The former President hailed Meek as "a sponge" who can soak up information and make informed decisions. "He's a doer," said Clinton, chastising the talkers in Washington, D.C. including giving himself a good natured ribbing. "I love to talk. But that ain't no substitute for doing!" The crowd laughed with him. "And Kendrick Meek is a doer," he said to boisterous approval.
Clinton has known Meek since he was governor of Arkansas and Meek was a Florida Highway Patrol officer doing security detail for Lt. Governor Buddy McKay. "I have watched him grow," said Clinton, rising through the ranks at the FHP, rising the ranks of the Florida legislature, and then winning three largely uncontested races for the House seat held by his mother, Carrie. Clinton has held five fundraisers for Meek previously.
As for Obama, his primary objective is to rustle up some dough for Alex Sink, who is running to replace Charlie Crist as governor. Many have been curious if Obama will mention or make an appearance with Meek and maybe offer up a man-hug to bolster his chances in the Aug. 24 primary against billionaire Jeff Greene.
The President is expected to make his appearance around 4:30 p.m. at the Fontainebleau Hotel on South Beach. Details have Air Force One touching down at 4 p.m. at Miami International Airport, which should snarl up traffic just enough to ruin your hump day.
