Principal Accused of Sex Cover Up in Court

Miami Northwestern's former principal's trial begins

It's been nearly three years since a Miami principal accused of trying to cover up a star football player's school bathroom trysts was arrested, but Monday he finally gets his day in court.

The trial of Dwight Bernard, former principal of Northwestern Senior High, begins Monday with pre-trial motions set to take place in the morning.

The scandal surrounding Bernard broke in 2007, after an 18-year-old football player had sex with a 14-year-old girl in one of the school's bathrooms.

Bernard was arrested and charged with official misconduct after police said he knew about the illegal sexual encounter but didn't report it to police and never disciplined the student.

The student, Antwain Easterling, was charged with lewd and lascivious battery on a minor. Despite the allegations, Easterling, a star running back, was allowed to play for Northwestern in the state title game, helping them to the championship. The charges against him were later dismissed after he completed a pretrial program.

Easterling, now 22, saw his brief college career fizzle out after he was kicked off the team at Southern Miss in his first year.
