Opponents of a state-sanctioned black bear hunt set to begin next month are ramping up their efforts to stop it.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that about 100 animal welfare activists were in downtown Orlando Thursday. Among the protesters was a Wekiva group that has filed a lawsuit against the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission seeking to stop the hunt.
A judge in Tallahassee will hear arguments in the lawsuit brought by Speak Up Wekiva on Oct. 1.
The hunt is scheduled to begin Oct. 24. So far, more than 2,000 hunters have obtained state licenses to participate.
It would be Florida's first bear hunt in more than two decades.
