A public hearing will be held Tuesday where the members of the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority’s board of directors will vote on establishing electronic tolls on State Roads 836 and 112, which will consequently raise toll rates, The Miami Herald reported.

The MDX, an independent agency, was established by the Miami-Dade Commission 18 years ago to make sure that revenue from the tolls would not be spent outside South Florida.

Tolls To Increase At Most State-Operated Locations

But although some governmental authorities have expressed their support, many have opposed the tolls and would like to see MDX close altogether, the report said.

Carlos García, co-founder of RollBackTolls.com told the Herald that implementing these tolls would cause a raise in both SunPass users and those who do not own a SunPass.

Florida Tolls to Increase

Like other South Florida highways, a vote to allow the tolls would mean that those who do not own a SunPass would be photographed and later receive a bill in the mail.

The meeting will be held at 4 p.m. and it will be open to the public. Live streaming of the meeting will also be available at www.mdxway.com.
