Rare Gold Coins Donated to Salvation Army in Pompano

For the second year in a row, a generous donor dropped two rare gold coins into a Salvation Army red kettle in South Florida.

The two 1947 Mexican gold coins were found wrapped in a $1 bill at the WalMart in Pompano Beach, according to the Salvation Army of Broward County.

Three of the same coins were dropped into the kettle last year. The Salvation Army has dubbed the donor the "Coin Crusader."

“This mystery donor has certainly lifted our holiday spirits once again. These unique gifts help us highlight the incredible support needed for the programs that take place during the holidays and all year-round,” said Major Keath Biggers, Area Commander for The Salvation Army of Broward County.

The coins, depending on the daily price of gold, are worth $1,500 a piece.

The Salvation Army is trying to make up for a 12 percent drop in kettle donations, compared to the same time last year.
