Rental Car Ripoff Near Miami Airport

Officers arrested one man at the scene who faces burglary and grand theft auto charges.

A Hertz car overflow lot near the Miami International Airport was found in ruins Thursday morning after thieves not only broke in but also busted out. Police say they used the very thing they wanted to steal as battering rams.

The incident happened just after 2 a.m. on Northwest 24th St. Police believe at least four men got inside, smashed down a fence with a Hertz van and made off with rental cars. At least two of the cars were found smashed near the scene. Investigators say it could be a week before company officials have a tally of just how many cars the thieves grabbed.

“These people came and broke the fence and started taking cars out. It’s really strange. We have the police and the detectives working on it so let’s see what happens,” said manager Louis Melendez, who arrived Thursday morning to see the business in shambles.
