Giancarlo Stanton Agrees To Record 13-Year Contract: Report

Giancarlo Stanton and the Marlins have reportedly come to terms on a 13-year contract worth $325 million

The Miami Marlins have come to terms with Giancarlo Stanton on a record-breaking $325 million contract per NY Daily News.

The contract is reportedly for 13 years and will include a no-trade clause as well as an opt-out clause. The contract is a record in terms of dollars in American sports history. The no-trade clause is unique for the franchise as team policy has been to avoid such clauses. The opt-out is after the sixth season of the deal and would enable Stanton to become a free agent.

The Marlins will hold a press conference at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday according to the report.

Stanton who is only 25 has become a team leader for Miami and is one of the biggest names in the game. Last Thursday, he finished second for the National League Most Valuable Player award and should be in the discussion for years to come.

While the money and years given to Stanton are monumental, the right-fielder has also been outspoken about wanting to see a commitment from the team in terms of winning. There was an improvement on the field in 2014 and now there has been positive signs off the field.

It has been reported that the team has discussed contract extensions with Jose Fernandez, Christian Yelich and Adeiny Hechavarria. Fernandez may prove to be the most difficult to sign due to his future salary expectations especially with Stanton's new deal on the books

The Marlins may still also seek help in the free agent market. The breakdown of Stanton's new contract is unknown at his point but it is likely that his 2015 salary pales in comparison to the latter years of the deal. Knowing how much they have committed to Stanton going forward should help the Marlins put a competitive team on the field annually.

The 2015 payroll for the Marlins is not expected to be at the level of a larger market team but is expected to be higher than last season.
