Residents Complain of ‘Fowl' Smell From Fast Food Restaurant on Florida's Treasure Coast

What to Know

  • The restaurant installed a cleaning system shortly after opening over a year ago, a move that came after complaints started.

Residents in one neighborhood along Florida’s Treasure Coast don’t exactly love that chicken from a nearby fast food restaurant – in fact, they say the smell coming from the store downright stinks.

NBC affiliate WPTV -TV reports that residents in Stuart have complained that the smell of chicken and grease from a Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen located near their homes does not allow them to be outside.

"If my wife and I are on the back patio and that wind is coming in our direction and the temperatures are the way they are now, we can’t be out there on the back patio," resident Ron Taylor told the station.

The restaurant installed a cleaning system shortly after opening over a year ago, a move that came after complaints started and Martin County officials forced the owner to install it. But residents say it has not helped and think the system is not being cleaned properly, which causes the “fowl” odor.

County commissioner Stacey Hetherington said she has smelled the odor in the neighborhood and is working on a compromise between all involved, including working on how often the filter system should be cleaned.
