Residents Displaced, Firefighter Injured in Hollywood Apartment Fire

Flames gutted an apartment unit Friday morning in Hollywood, displacing residents and sending a firefighter to the hospital.

The fire began at around 10 p.m. at a ground-level apartment unit at Kimwood Condominiums near North 14th Way and Arthur Street, according to the Hollywood Fire Rescue.

"I saw smoke. Tons of smoke just billowing and we saw the trucks coming down from the fifth floor on the corner, it looked pretty bad," said Nan Bifield, a witness.

Conditions were so smoky that an elderly woman had to be escorted by police officers out of her apartment.

"We had an elderly female that was in this corner apartment, and the way the fire was and the way the smoke was coming out, it was billowing into her apartment so she couldn’t see," said acting battalion chief of Hollywood Fire Rescue Brian White.

A firefighter broke his hand while battling the fire, fire rescue said. He was hospitalized with minor injuries.

All residents were evacuated as crews extinguished the flames and three units had heavy smoke damage.

It’s unclear what exactly sparked the fire and the cause remains under investigation.
