Last-minute appeals are being heard for a South Florida man who faces execution for killing two women by beating them with a hammer and setting them on fire.
Barring a successful appeal, 55-year-old Robert L. Henry is scheduled to die by injection Thursday evening at Florida State Prison in Starke. He was convicted of the 1987 slayings of 53-year-old Phyllis Harris and 35-year-old Janet Thermidor, his co-workers at a Deerfield Beach fabric store.
Henry at first told police the crime was committed by an unknown assailant. But Thermidor lived long enough to positively identify him as the perpetrator and he later confessed.
Prosecutors say Henry's total take for the crime was just over $1,200.
Henry is challenging Florida's method of lethal injection in his latest U.S. Supreme Court appeal.
