‘Rogue' Hospital Worker May Have Stolen Patient Info: Jackson Health

Jackson Health System is investigating a "rogue" hospital employee who may have been stealing confidential patient information over the past five years, officials said Tuesday.

The employee, identified as Evelina Reid, who was placed on administrative leave pending termination proceedings, may have stolen names, birthdates, social security numbers and home addresses, JHS officials said in a statement.

A total of 24,800 patients may have had their identification stolen during the five-year period, officials said.

Reid is a hospital unit secretary who has worked at Jackson Memorial Hospital since 2005.

"Jackson Health System is committed to patient confidentiality. The safety and security of our patients is top priority," the statement read, in part. "In order to protect our patients' rights and private information, we enforce strict rules for those who handle patient information."

JHS has launched a full investigation and is cooperating with law enforcement agencies, officials said. They are also in the process of acquiring and implementing a "more robust" security system to monitor access to patient records, officials said.

Patients whose personal information was accessed will be notified and offered free credit monitoring, officials said. Patients seeking additional information about the breach should email privacyprotection@jhsmiami.org.
