Rothstein Associate Sentenced to 5 Years

Stephen Caputi co-owned a night club with the convicted Ponzi schemer

A man who posed as a bank executive to lure clients into a Ponzi scheme was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday.

Stephen Caputi, 53, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud for his role in convicted felon Scott Rothstein's billion dollar scam, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

Rothstein is serving a 50-year prison sentence on fraud charges.

Caputi and Rothstein co-owned Cafe Iguanas in Pembroke Pines, but it was Caputi's decision to pose as a TD Bank official to potential Rothstein investors that got him in trouble with the law, federal prosecutors said.

Caputi gave fraudulent bank statements to investors to bolster Rothstein's claims of profitable earnings, prosecutors alleged.

So far, three people have been sentenced to prison for their roles in the Ponzi scheme and another three are awaiting sentencing.
