Saturday Marks the Start of the 2019 Hurricane Season

Saturday marked the first day of the Atlantic hurricane season as, if on cue, an area of disturbed weather was being monitored in the Bay of Campeche.

Late Saturday evening, the National Hurricane Center gave this area a medium chance for development over the next several days.

While no threat to South Florida, the system may become mature enough that a hurricane reconnaissance aircraft could fly to investigate it Sunday or Monday.

Regardless, the area has the potential to produce noteworthy rains in Mexico through midweek.

The beginning of each hurricane season should serve as a reminder of the importance of being weather aware and storm ready.

Use the NBC 6 Hurricane Guide as your primary tool to prepare your family and residence this season.

While forecasts from NOAA and Colorado State are calling for “near normal” or “slightly below normal” activity in the Atlantic basin, these forecasts do not speak to the potential for landfall anywhere in the United State.

The best plan is to be prepared, no matter what the season may offer.

Also, “know your zone” before the season starts. Understand your location, your vulnerability and be ready to evacuate if the need arises this season.

The more you know now, the better prepared you’ll be and the better you’ll respond to executing your plan should a storm threaten South Florida this hurricane season.
