School Bus Operator Keeps It All in the Family

If you know Lucille Greene, chances are you will have a job

Broward County's school bus system has a really nice friends and family plan.

If you are a friend or family member of Lucille Greene, a transportation supervisor, you get a job.

The longtime director has come under fire for getting 20 of her closest loved ones jobs within her department, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Many of the relatives aren't quite qualified for their jobs and they know it, the investigation showed.

Some have been caught sleeping on the job. Others have been fired only to be rehired by Grandma Greene.

The school bus system's organizational chart looks more like a Lucille Greene family tree. Grandsons and granddaughters. Neices and nephews. A couple of cousins.

In total, 13 relatives drive, clean or fix Broward school buses and they all have Greene to thank for keeping them employed. At least another six close friends have gained employment with Greene's assistance.

Greene has been with the bus system for 40 years and makes about $81,000 a year. She has been reassigned and now the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating whether the grandmother might face some type of charges.

In total, the Greene clan brings in about $500,000 in school board salary.

"We don't know of any other department within the district where a director has so many relatives and close associates, such as godchildren and children of godchildren, working within their area of supervision," Broward Teachers Union spokesman John Ristow told the Sun-Sentinel. "It defies logic that having this many people working within her department is just a coincidence."
