Scientists Seek Volunteers in Panhandle Scallop Search

Scientists are enlisting the help of volunteers with boats or snorkeling skills in a search for scallops in one Florida Panhandle region.

Researches from the Florida Sea Grant hope to survey the scallop population of Santa Rosa Sound on Aug. 1. Researchers want to gauge the size of the scallop population in the Pensacola Bay system.

The Northwest Florida Daily News reports that volunteers will work in teams and search specific areas. But the volunteers will not be allowed to harvest any scallops, because it is not scallop season.

The scientist say they should be able to complete the survey in half a day and that it would take at least a week to survey the same area without the volunteers.
